It's quite simple really, we learn this generally before we are two, you put one foot in front of the other and let nature do the rest, and before you know it you have travelled.
Walking is a wonderful form of exercise that can be enjoyed by everyone, whether you are young or old, in a town or in the country.
There is a theory now that walking 10,000 steps per day will help keep you fit and healthy. I'm not sure where this came from, but if you want to keep an eye on what you are doing then you can get a pedometer to measure your steps.
You need to think about what type of walking you are doing before you go and buy your kit. If you are Urban Hiking then you'll need city guide, a bottle of water, camera, credit card and maybe a waterproof jacket and a bag, to keep it all in. Definitely comfortable shoes as the street will be hard. Trainers will usually suffice.
If you are going on short valley walks, or around your local country side, then you will need different kit. Valley walking can still be strenuous and the kit you get for it is important. Perhaps the most important piece if equipment is the map and compass, so you can follow the planned route. Make sure you can use it first, look at the Walk and Travel guide on how to navigate.
